Introduction to the Department

The Department of Cosmetics at Kwangju Women’s University operates a systematic curriculum connected to industrial field practice, covering everything from cosmetic material development to formulation research, product planning, efficacy evaluation, and quality control, in order to cultivate creative leaders who will lead the global K-cosmetics industry.

The department also cultivates future-oriented cosmetics professionals equipped with problem-solving abilities, scientific expertise, global perspectives, ethical responsibility, and social communication skills.

Introduction to Cosmetics

Based on basic theories such as the definition, history, functional classification, formulation types, and purposes of use of cosmetics, this course provides an integrated understanding of the structure of the cosmetics industry and global trends.

Cosmetic Dermatology

This course teaches skin anatomy and physiology, barrier function, the pathophysiology of skin diseases, and interactions with functional cosmetic ingredients, while exploring the scientific basis of skin reactions.

Life Science

This course teaches the structures and functions of basic elements that constitute biological systems, including cells, genes, proteins, and enzymes, and examines their connection with life phenomena related to cosmetics.

General Chemistry

Based on fundamental chemical principles such as atomic and molecular structures, chemical bonding, acid-base reactions, oxidation-reduction, and chemical equilibrium, this course helps students understand the chemical behavior of cosmetic ingredients.

Introduction to Perfumery

Based on the chemical and sensory characteristics of fragrance ingredients and perfumery theory, this course teaches fragrance combination and emotional design elements, thereby establishing the foundation for cosmetic fragrance development.

Cosmetics Industry and Marketing Basics

This course helps students acquire industry practice-based knowledge, including the structure of domestic and overseas cosmetics industries, distribution channels, consumer analysis, brand positioning, marketing strategy establishment, and market trend analysis.

Cosmetic Ingredients

This course teaches the physicochemical characteristics of moisturizers, emulsifiers, surfactants, preservatives, fragrances, sunscreens, and other ingredients, as well as their mechanisms of skin application and scientific evidence related to stability and efficacy.

Basic Cosmetic Formulation Practice

This course provides practice in the full cycle of basic products such as creams, lotions, and cleansers, including formulation design, understanding of emulsion systems, control of process variables, manufacturing processes, and quality analysis.

Organic Chemistry

This course deepens students’ understanding of the molecular characteristics and synthetic reactions of cosmetic ingredients, focusing on the structures of organic molecules, functional groups, reaction mechanisms, and stereochemistry.

Fundamentals of Cosmetics Law

This course systematically teaches domestic and international regulatory policies and industry-related legal standards, including the Cosmetics Act, functional cosmetics certification system, ingredient notifications, labeling requirements, and standards for human application tests.

Practice of Cleansing and Hair Cosmetics Manufacturing

This practice-centered course teaches the formulation principles, mechanisms of surfactant action, sensory evaluation, and manufacturing processes of cleansing and hair products such as shampoo, cleansing foam, and conditioner.

Biochemistry

Focusing on the structures, functions, and metabolic pathways of biological macromolecules such as proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, and carbohydrates, this course helps students understand skin physiology and the mechanisms of functional cosmetics from a biochemical perspective.

This course teaches theories of quality assurance, QA, and quality control, QC, GMP-based process management, physical, chemical, and microbiological testing methods, and product stability evaluation standards.

This course cultivates students’ abilities in product concept planning based on consumer needs analysis, market positioning, packaging strategies, brand storytelling, and marketing content planning.

Functional Cosmetic Formulation Practice

This course provides practice in the characteristics of main ingredients, skin application mechanisms, and formulation technologies for functional cosmetics, including whitening, wrinkle improvement, and UV protection, while reflecting KFDA certification standards.

This course teaches hygiene and safety management systems, focusing on microbial risk management in cosmetics, microbial growth inhibition technologies, preservative system design, and microbiological testing methods based on KS and ISO standards.

Advanced Cosmetic Perfumery Applications

This course provides practice in fragrance blending techniques, fragrance analysis by family, emotional perfumery strategies according to product concepts, and simulation-based fragrance development.

This course teaches how to create skin models using 3D bioprinting technology and examines their potential use for skin application evaluation of new materials and as alternative testing methods.

Base Makeup Cosmetic Formulation Practice

This course provides practice in formulation technologies for products such as foundation, primer, and BB cream, including pigment dispersion and coverage improvement technologies, and evaluates product spreadability, durability, and related properties.

This course helps students understand the principles of instrumental analysis, including UV-Vis, HPLC, GC, and FT-IR, and develop quantitative and qualitative analysis abilities for cosmetic ingredients and products.

This is a comprehensive design course in which students carry out projects connected to industries and research institutions and experience the entire process of planning, development, evaluation, and reporting based on practical work.
