Introduction to the Department

First of all, we sincerely thank everyone who has visited the website of the Department of Police Administration at Kwangju Women’s University, which is showing a case close to revolutionary for a regional university, with the goal of becoming “No. 1 in Korea for producing successful female police officer candidates while enrolled.”

Our department operates systematic and specialized programs to achieve the goal of cultivating elite female police officers equipped with professional knowledge in the field of public safety and practical crisis response abilities, in response to the national and public demand for “protecting the lives, bodies, and property of the people and maintaining public peace and order.”

First, we operate a specialized curriculum for producing female police officers. We have organized a customized curriculum by concentrating major subjects essential for the open competitive recruitment examination for female police officers in the first and second years, and by intensively arranging legal subjects required for special recruitment of police officers in the field of law in the third and fourth years. In addition, we operate a two-track curriculum so that students can also prepare for examinations for other national public service positions, including court officials, prosecution officials, correctional officials, commissioned officers, and non-commissioned officers.

Second, we operate Eodeung Haksa, a police officer examination study room, open 24 hours a day to strengthen the learning competencies of students in the Department of Police Administration. We also operate a martial arts hall exclusively for the Department of Police Administration for practical training in police martial arts, including kendo, judo, taekwondo, and hapkido.

Third, at the department level, we actively conduct employment competency enhancement programs, field practice, mentoring by employed alumni, and mock police interviews. In addition, we have introduced a “responsible professor system dedicated to employment,” which provides responsible guidance “from admission to employment.” Through this system, we do our utmost to motivate students by presenting successful role models through information analysis on their desired employment fields, appropriate communication skills, mock interviews, meetings with local figures, and introductions to successful individuals.

Going forward, the Department of Police Administration at Kwangju Women’s University will not be satisfied with its leading position as “No. 1 in the success rate of female police officer candidates while enrolled,” but will continue to be a department that always considers what must be done to produce the best experts in the field of public safety services.

Educational Goals

  • To cultivate convergence talents equipped with the ability to analyze future society and solve public safety issues
  • To cultivate field-practice-oriented talents equipped with professional knowledge and crisis response abilities
  • To cultivate responsible female leaders who serve for the development of the local community

Vision

Expansion of Recruitment of Autonomous Police Officers Following the Introduction of the Metropolitan-Level Autonomous Police System In order to provide resident-oriented public safety services and strengthen linkages with basic local governments, city, county, and district autonomous police units are planned to be established at the city, county, and district levels. In addition, city and provincial autonomous police units are planned to be operated directly under metropolitan local governments in order to strengthen law enforcement capacity and meet administrative demands at the metropolitan level.

Investigative authority will be granted for general crimes closely related to the formation of residents’ basic social relationships, such as school violence, domestic violence, and sexual violence crimes. Investigative duties related to animal safety management, such as so-called “companion dog incidents,” will also be carried out.

As public safety, traffic, security, and public order maintenance duties related to major prevention, enforcement, risk prevention, and public order maintenance, as well as special judicial police duties related to local specialized administration, are assigned, demand for experts from police-related departments and recruitment nationwide are expected to increase.

Expansion of Recruitment of Female Police Officers In recent crimes, the number of cases in which victims are children and women is increasing.

It is desirable for such criminal cases to be handled by female police officers. However, female police officers account for only about 9% of all police officers in Korea. A continuous increase in the number of female police officers can be expected in the future, and recently, under the government’s public safety policy to increase the number of police officers by 20,000, the proportion of female police officers has also been steadily increasing.

“You can realize your dream of becoming a female police officer.”

The Department of Police Administration at Kwangju Women’s University, which operates educational goals, curricula, and various learning programs to produce female police officers, will be a truly valuable opportunity to move one step closer to becoming a police officer.
