Introduction to the Department

“Cultivating competent international English education professionals”

The Department of Global English Education cultivates competent international English education professionals who can apply approaches to English education, teaching procedures, teaching techniques, various activities, and practical teaching methods to the field through systematic and scientific educational programs that make use of smart learning for English as an international common language.

English has firmly established its status as a global common language, and interest in English education and children’s English education is very high in Korea.

Accordingly, English was included as a subject in Korea’s elementary school curriculum in 1997, and various forms of English education are being implemented throughout society.

In addition, demand is increasing for the theoretical establishment of children’s English education appropriate for children’s developmental stages and for new teaching methods. Demand is also increasing for experts related to curriculum and textbook development in children’s English education.

In response to these social trends and demands, the Department of Global English Education aims to cultivate children’s English education professionals who are equipped with theories based on children’s developmental stages and English teaching techniques applicable to the field.

Educational Goals / Vision

This major aims to cultivate experts in the field of children’s English education for preschool and elementary school children.

Its main purpose is to cultivate professionals based on fundamental knowledge and field experience so that they can provide desirable English education suited to children’s emotional, cognitive, and physical development.

To this end, the major helps students develop the ability to apply various theories in the field of children’s English education to actual English education settings.

Course Descriptions

Children’s English Song

This course teaches the theory and practice of English songs for children, which are effective tools for leading children’s English classes in an enjoyable and relaxed way. Children can engage in unconscious repeated practice through fun melodies and exciting rhythms without feeling that they are studying English. Students learn and practice various types of children’s songs.

Education Theory of Children’s English

This course analyzes and studies various theories related to children’s English education so that they can be applied in children’s English education field settings.

Phonics

This course enhances students’ understanding of the English sound system and helps them learn and practice principles and methods of pronunciation instruction appropriate for actual classroom situations.

Teaching Children’s English Vocabulary and Sentence

Through textbooks for children, students learn English vocabulary acquisition and basic sentence instruction, as well as various teaching and learning methods.

English Fairy Tales

This course presents teaching and learning methods through which children can encounter realistic and diverse English materials in fairy tales and use English expressions learned through integrated classes. Students learn and practice how to select and teach English fairy tales, how to read and tell English fairy tales in an enjoyable way, and how to manage the classroom.

English Listening and Speaking 1, 2

This course helps students learn and practice various teaching methods for teaching English listening and speaking to children.

Teaching English Grammar to Children

This course teaches various learning methods that enable children to acquire grammar in a step-by-step and systematic way according to the stages of children’s language acquisition.

English Grammar

This course helps students understand basic theories of English grammar and organizes essential elements of English sentence construction, including parts of speech, sentence elements, and the five basic sentence patterns.

Teaching English Game

This course presents ways to realize communication-centered English classes through various language learning activities and materials. Students learn and practice methods for maximizing students’ interest, motivation, and learning effects through actual games.

Understanding American and British Cultures

This course teaches the concept of culture, differences between English-speaking cultures and multiculturalism, methods of incorporating multicultural elements into English education, and ways to study and use linguistic and nonverbal characteristics reflecting cultural elements in class.

Language Acquisition

This course examines the acquisition processes of first and foreign languages, differences in acquisition methods, social, cultural, and individual factors for successful foreign language acquisition, and characteristics that appear in the language development process.

Teaching English Musical

This course teaches how to guide drama and musicals, which are very effective tools in children’s English classrooms. Drama engages students at multiple levels through the body, mind, emotions, language, and social interaction. Students learn the theory and practice of introducing drama into English classes.

English Reading and Writing

Together with theories of written language development, this course helps students learn and practice various teaching methods for reading and writing instruction appropriate for students.

Discourse and English Teaching for Children

This course helps students understand children’s use of English according to situations and teaches methods for effectively instructing appropriate English use.

English Conversation and Composition

This course helps students learn and practice English conversation skills and writing practice necessary for daily life.

English Teaching Methodology

Based on the principles and teaching theories of foreign language education, this course helps students learn and practice various English teaching methods, instructional techniques, and application methods.

English Teaching Using Internet

This course presents directions for classes using multimedia, including computers, mobile devices, TV, and video, and helps students practice using them in actual classroom settings.

English Literacy Teaching to Children

This course helps students learn and practice methods for improving reading literacy for children learning English as a foreign language.

Classroom English

By learning various English expressions used in the classroom, this course presents and helps students practice basic models of English use required of teachers during class.

English Interview

This course helps students practice prospective job field situations using vivid and realistic English, together with various expressions and documents needed for English interviews in different fields.

Presentation English

In relation to English presentation classes, this course helps students studying English easily understand the overall fields of English linguistics, including phonetics, semantics, syntax, English grammar, the history of English, and English morphology. Students learn basic terms, concepts, and practical application principles, and acquire a wide range of expressions used in English presentation classes.

Teaching Reading to Children

This course broadly examines books suitable for children’s reading by level and type, and teaches various reading instruction methods appropriate for children.

Research and Development of Children’s English Materials

This course helps students understand textbook research necessary for teaching children’s English, explore domestic and overseas English textbooks for children that can be used in actual English education settings, and acquire basic development skills, thereby cultivating their abilities as children’s English teachers.

Teaching English Writing to Children

This course helps students understand basic principles and methodologies for teaching English writing to children and learn various writing instruction methods that can be used in children’s English education field settings.

Teaching Children English Class

This course helps students enhance their professionalism as children’s English teachers and learn theories of instruction and techniques necessary for classes.

Seminar in Childhood English Education

This course studies and analyzes the latest theories in the field of children’s English education by topic and establishes a foundation for understanding the field and the direction of children’s English education through specialized topic-centered workshops.

English Language Assessment for Children

This course deals with theories and practice related to assessing children’s English proficiency.

Children English Teaching through Literature

By selecting and reading classic literary texts suitable for children’s English education, this course expands English education content and explores ways to apply it to children’s English education.

English Employment Start-up Mentoring

This course explores ways to succeed in employment and startup in the English field through the experiences and preparation methods of mentors who have experience in domestic and overseas employment and startup.
