Introduction to the Department

The Department of Spatial Design at Kwangju Women’s University has established the following departmental operation strategies to cultivate creative professionals who will lead spatial design in future society.

1. Cultivating Convergence-Type Life Space Designers

  • Strengthening practical educational competencies to actively respond to paradigm shifts in future society and the needs of the local community Core Strategy: Establishing an educational system based on “spatial branding” that integrates various types of spaces, including residential, commercial, exhibition, and wellness spaces Implementation Plan: Developing advanced education centered on practical field projects Expected Effect: Cultivating convergence-type life space experts who break down the boundaries of space

2. Expansion and Reorganization of the AI Convergence Degree Program, Digital-Based Convergence Education Innovation

  • Creating a future-oriented design education environment through AI digital design education that incorporates the latest technologies Major Curriculum: Operation of AI Digital Design Practice 1 and 2, and AI Convergence Digital Spatial Design LAB 1 and 2 Educational Method: Project-based advanced learning using AI and digital tools Direction of Reorganization: Leading digital transformation through the expansion and reorganization of the AI Convergence Degree Program

3. Advancement of the MAUM Degree Program and Wellness Spatial Design Education

  • Expanding and applying a specialized wellness-centered curriculum that enhances human psychological stability and quality of life Educational Content: Combination of visual expression elements such as mindfulness, wellness tourism, wellness space planning theory, color and form, furniture and lighting, and display Reorganization: Strengthening professionalism by reflecting the MAUM Degree Program Expected Effect: Expanding the field of wellness spatial design and securing competitiveness in admissions and employment through differentiated design

Educational Goals / Vision

The specific educational goals for achieving the educational purpose of the Department of Spatial Design at Kwangju Women’s University are as follows.

  • To help students acquire various spatial design processes, including residential, office, commercial, exhibition, and wellness spaces, in order to develop the qualities and competencies required of professional spatial designers.
  • To help students acquire advanced knowledge in various areas of spatial design, including materials, colors, furniture, and lighting, in order to cultivate self-directed problem-solving abilities and creative thinking competencies through comprehensive thinking.
  • To cultivate sharing and community awareness so that students can contribute to local community development by utilizing their professional knowledge and competencies.
  • To cultivate practical field senses in spatial design based on theoretical knowledge of spatial design, design practice skills, and computer skills, thereby aiming to cultivate professional spatial designers with integrated thinking.

Course Descriptions

Basic Formative Design

As a basic course for studying interior design, this course cultivates spatial understanding and spatial sensibility. Students study theories by examining overseas and domestic cases related to architectural forms and spatial composition, and carry out formative practice.

Basic Drafting

As a basic course for conducting interior space design, this course teaches basic drafting symbols and basic drawing work. Through this, students develop spatial communication abilities.

Spatial Design Expression Techniques

Wellness Space Planning Theory

This course helps students understand the principles and elements of wellness space planning and establish an overall understanding and theoretical foundation for wellness spatial design through practical theoretical learning necessary for planning each area of wellness space.

Digital Three-Dimensional Formative Design

This course helps students practice methodologies for expressing their own spatial intentions through digital three-dimensional formative practice. Through repeated learning, students understand the principles of three-dimensional spatial composition. Using CAD, SketchUp, and other tools for digital three-dimensional formative design, students implement the expressive abilities of existing formative design courses through digital tools.

2D Graphics

This course helps students develop spatial design expression abilities by cultivating 2D graphic expression skills using Illustrator, Photoshop, and other tools for spatial design formation.

Residential Space Design

This course provides theoretical learning on planning concepts and design methods for residential spaces where citizens live, and students carry out actual residential space design assignments as projects.

Color and Behavior

This course helps students recognize basic theories of color design and color effects in spaces, analyze colors in various spaces, and learn methodologies for independently establishing color environment plans. In addition, based on an understanding of various experiences and psychological situations that humans feel in space, students learn methods for designing human sensibility.

Basic 3D Graphics

This course uses computers to digitize drawing abilities acquired through basic drafting and other courses. Specifically, students acquire basic competencies necessary for drawing work through basic AutoCAD commands and related skills.

Furniture Design

By learning the history and design methods of furniture design, students clearly understand the design characteristics of modern furniture and explore future directions for furniture design. Students understand specific production processes and gain practical experience through field practice.

Commercial Space Design

This course provides theoretical learning on planning concepts and design methods for commercial spaces, such as restaurants, food service spaces, and department stores. Students carry out actual commercial space design assignments as projects.

Ergonomics

Students understand basic human conditions and further understand various experiences and psychological situations that humans feel in space. Through this, students learn spatial design methodologies that can design human sensibility.

Lighting Design

This course teaches the functions, types, and construction methods of lighting, which completes the atmosphere of a space and supports human life.

Construction and Materials

This course teaches the characteristics of materials used indoors and outdoors and the construction methods for each material. Students learn how to specifically apply each material to interior design through literature review and field investigation.

Advanced 3D Graphics

This course helps students acquire methods for using various software programs, including CAD, MAX, SketchUp, Photoshop, and Illustrator, in order to learn a 2D-centered digital-based design process and cultivate expressive abilities.

AI Digital Design Practice 1

This course helps students acquire methods for using various software programs to learn a 3D-centered digital design process, including SketchUp and MAX, and cultivate expressive abilities by using AI.

Wellness Landscape Space Theory

This course helps students gain a broader perspective on wellness landscape spaces through the introduction and discussion of theoretical concepts that can serve as the foundation for wellness landscape spaces, related planning methodologies, related laws and systems, and planning types according to the hierarchy of spatial scale.

Exhibition Space Design

This course provides theoretical learning on planning concepts and design methods for exhibition spaces such as museums and art galleries. Students carry out actual exhibition space design assignments as projects.

Display

This course teaches exhibition design strategies for effectively conveying product images and maximizing product effects, and applies them to actual exhibition design. Students study various exhibition spaces, ranging from retail stores to department stores, museums, and showrooms.

Environment and Laws

This course helps students understand and learn general matters related to architectural environments. Students establish laws, regulations, and various environmental conditions required in architectural planning, including building structure, environmental facilities, building laws and regulations, and building construction.

AI Digital Design Practice 2

This is an advanced course that deepens students’ ability to use various digital-based programs that express 2D and 3D according to design intentions by using AI.

Wellness Spatial Design

This course provides theoretical learning on planning concepts and design methods for wellness spatial design for physical, mental, and social health. Students carry out actual wellness spatial design assignments as projects.

Structure and Estimation

This course helps students experience and consider the preparation of construction design documents at a level that enables practical work based on design results, thereby cultivating field adaptability. It also teaches the process of calculating construction costs by estimating materials, labor, equipment, and quantities by work process required for architectural construction based on design drawings and specifications.

History of Spatial Design

This course historically examines various styles of Western interior spaces. Students explore the applicability of historical styles to contemporary spaces.

AI Convergence Digital Spatial Design LAB 1

This course deepens students’ ability to freely express and apply digital-based programs that express 3D by converging them with AI according to design intentions.

Graduation Project Studio 1

As a project-based course that cultivates the ability to strategically select and proceed with various spatial design methodologies, this course helps students develop the ability to complete graduation project work.

Wellness Cultural Space Seminar

Based on contemporary spatial design discourse and needs, this course creates discourse on the direction and meaning of building cultural spaces by integrating the concept of wellness for physical, mental, and social health.

Mindfulness and Wellness

This course helps students understand the meaning and practice process of mindfulness, which includes the processes of understanding the mind, discovering the mind, communicating the mind, and empathizing with the mind, and learn a new paradigm combined with wellness.

AI Convergence Digital Spatial Design LAB 2

Based on the skills acquired in digital spatial design, this course allows students to carry out practical projects converged with AI so that they can independently and strategically create solutions to problems that may arise in real situations.

Portfolio

This course helps students organize and review all projects completed in the Department of Spatial Design and prepare a portfolio that demonstrates their individual characteristics and abilities.

Graduation Project Studio 2

This course carries out projects of a higher level of difficulty than Studio 1. It is a project-based course for graduation projects that cultivates the ability to strategically select and proceed with various spatial design methodologies.

Wellness Tourism

This course helps students learn wellness tourism programs for physical, mental, and social health, create and plan actual tourism courses, and learn ways to lead changes in the new tourism industry.
